JORGE AMADO  

Um homem realizado, segundo um conhecido provérbio, é o que, durante sua vida, escreveu livros, teve filhos, plantou uma árvore. Jorge Amado foi um homem feliz: escreveu livros que encantam o público no mundo inteiro. Seus romances multiplicam-se em várias línguas, em edições sucessivas, adaptados para o cinema, a televisão e o teatro. 

Se o homem feliz teve filhos, Jorge Amado foi também plenamente realizado. Seus filhos, Paloma e João Jorge, estiveram presentes em sua vida o tempo todo prodigalizando afeto, compreensão e companheirismo. Zélia, sua musa permanente, sua companheira, foi o centro de seu universo afetivo. 

Plantar árvores sempre foi uma de suas ocupações prediletas. Em sua casa do Rio Vermelho,  povoada de Exus, com seus encantados, seu banco de azulejos onde o casal costumava sentar-se de mãos dadas, o clima é de uma pequena floresta cercando as varandas aconchegantes.

Dizem também que as pessoas felizes não tem história, mas neste caso felicidade e história se confundem na vida de Jorge Amado: Uma longa trajetória pontuada de lutas e de poucas derrotas — e que ele sempre soube, com sabedoria, transformar em vitórias.

An accomplished man, according to a known proverb, is the one that, in the course of his life, has written books, fathered children and planted a tree. Jorge Amado was a happy man: he wrote books that still enchant readers all over the world. His novels multiply themselves in several languages, in successive editions, adaptations for film, television and theatre.

If the happy man had children, Jorge Amado was also fully accomplished. His children, Paloma and João Jorge, were always present in his life spreading affection, understanding and companionship. Zelia, his permanent muse, his partner, was the centre of his emotional universe.

Planting trees was always one of his favorite activities. In his house in Rio Vermelho, surrounded by Exus, with their spells, his tile bench where the couple used to sit holding hands, the atmosphere is of a small forest surrounding the cosy balconies.

There is also a saying that happy people don’t have a story but in this case happiness and history are intertwined with Jorge Amado’s life: a long trajectory punctuated by many battles, with only a few lost - which he always new, with wisdom, to turn into victories.
